What Is Emergency Support Services?


British Columbians forced from their homes by fire, floods, earthquakes or other emergencies are offered support from local volunteer Emergency Support Services (ESS) Teams. During this session you will learn about how ESS is organized in Campbell River as well as the services and training that the team provides.

A FireSmart Chat at Manson’s Hall - Free Admission

On Saturday October 13th the Strathcona Emergency Program will be offering a presentation on the FireSmart principles with a representative from Strategic Natural Resources.

Wildfires are unpredictable and interface fires present unique challenges and obstacles but by being practical and proactive it’s possible to reduce the risk of wildfire before it threatens your home and community. Homeowners can take simple steps to reduce wildfire impacts on properties and within our community. Learn more about the unpredictable nature and unique challenges and obstacles in fighting wildfires – and practical, proactive ways to reduce the risk of wildfire on Cortes Island.

The Disaster Preparedness Tradeshow is a fun, informative way to learn how to be prepared during an emergency.

  • Learn about different agencies involved in emergency management and how you on how you can you be better prepared.
  • Connect with members from the RCMP, Neighborhood Emergency Programs, Campbell River Emergency Support Services, Campbell River Search and Rescue and over two dozen other organizations.
  • Shop for emergency preparedness supplies through vendors such as GetMyKit and Holistic Emergency Preparedness.

First responders will be on-site giving equipment demonstration, vehicle tours, and answering questions. 

Earthquakes & Campbell River

You are invited to a free presentation with Earthquake Seismologist Alison Bird from Natural Resources Canada. Alison will discuss earthquakes in relation to our community. Canada's largest historic onshore earthquake occurred on June 23, 1946. The epicentre was in the Forbidden Plateau area. Her key topics will include:

  • What to expect from earthquakes.
  • Why we have earthquakes: the region’s tectonics.
  • Associated hazards: tsunami, landslides and liquefaction, plus damage.
  • How to reduce your risk and be prepared.
